oink oink

With news of its demise still steaming hot on the press and online music communities, OiNK still continues to generate waves of publicity and support all over the web. This particular one comes courtesy of Trent Reznor, the genius behind Nine Inch Nails:

What do you think about OiNK being shut down?
Trent: I'll admit I had an account there and frequented it quite often. At the end of the day, what made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store. Pretty much anything you could ever imagine, it was there, and it was there in the format you wanted. If OiNK cost anything, I would certainly have paid, but there isn't the equivalent of that in the retail space right now. iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc. Amazon has potential, but none of them get around the issue of pre-release leaks. And that's what's such a difficult puzzle at the moment. If your favorite band in the world has a leaked record out, do you listen to it or do you not listen to it? People on those boards, they're grateful for the person that uploaded it — they're the hero. They're not stealing it because they're going to make money off of it; they're stealing it because they love the band. I'm not saying that I think OiNK is morally correct, but I do know that it existed because it filled a void of what people want.

when shit happens

October 30, 2007

Just something that occupied my mind for a bit in light of the recent Glorietta tragedy, and after hearing an alarming story about (baranggay) election-related violence…

We often hear the phrase "everything happens for a reason" very often. It's one of the primary Christian beliefs that the higher being up above - in His infinite wisdom - has a plan. Often, we also hear the same people saying that man is the master of his own destiny… man has free will… nothing is written in stone… we can change our fate.

I just have trouble reconciling these two beliefs.

If everything happens for a reason and He has a plan, then how are we supposed to be masters of our own fate when there's already a plan? If it so happens that this plan conflicts with how we want our destiny/fate to play out, then how are we supposed to change "the plan" if nothing is written in stone?

What if something goes terribly wrong such that it shakes the very foundations of our lives: Are we supposed to believe that this is all part of His plan? Or do we resign ourselves to the belief that somewhere along the way, we did something wrong that caused this to happen? And in hindsight, if we did things differently, things would have worked out fine. (read: regret)

Or maybe we should only use the "God has a plan" belief for things beyond our control? If something goes wrong and you are accountable for it, then you did something wrong. However, if something goes wrong and you're not accountable for it, then God has a plan.

If that's the case… How convenient.

OiNK's Pink Palace, which is probably the biggest music-sharing torrent community online, was shut down by the authorities last Tuesday.

Seriously… what do the authorities and the music industry expect to happen? I dunno. If they want to move forward towards that goal of generating more revenue for the music industry though, I'm pretty sure that this will not help. I can tell you what will happen though. It's best illustrated by this image:

investment revisited

October 25, 2007

Ayoko na bantayan yung investment ko. Actually, medyo matagal ko na din namang hindi na binabantayan.

If it grows, then it grows…. if it falls, it falls… but I won't watch over it regularly anymore as opposed to what I've done before.

I won't actively pursue any activity anymore thinking that I will end up with a bigger gain. I did that a few months ago, but I ended up getting burnt instead.

However, hindi ako nagpapaka-"bahala na" because I got burnt. It's just that I realized that playing with my investment to get the maximum possible gains out of it isn't worth my time and effort. Hindi siya priority, kung baga. Given the opportunity, I will continue adding on to it; but otherwise, I'll just let it go with the natural ebb and flow of things.
