forgive and forget
October 23, 2007GA s04e04 - The Heart of the Matter
(start) In life only one thing is certain, apart from death and taxes: No matter how hard you try, no matter how good your intentions, you are going to make mistakes. You are going to hurt people. You are going to get hurt. And if you ever want to recover, there's really only one thing you can say…(end) Forgive and forget. That's what they say. It's good advice, but it's not very practical. When someone hurts us, we want to hurt them back. When someone wrongs us, we want to be right. Without forgiveness old scores never settle. Old wounds never heal, and the most we can hope for is that someday we'll be lucky enough to forget.
FYI - That opening voice-over is open-ended, so for the sake of those that don't watch the show, the "only one thing you can say" that the voice over is talking about is "I forgive you."
It's funny how the theme of this show progresses: The theme for the first episode was "changes", then for the second one it was "love and addiction", for the third one it was "the truth", and for this one it's "forgive and forget".
"Forgive and forget" is pretty complicated… lots of variables are involved: Are you the one doing the forgiving or are you the one asking for forgiveness? It matters who the other person is… what the gravity of the mistake was… what kind of relationship I have with the person… It's a case-to-case basis, really.
Over the past several months, there are three cases of "forgive and forget" that come to mind, and each of these cases have played out very different from each other.
