Love… … … Ain’t it a Bitch

March 21, 2006

“Have you ever been in love? Horrible isn’t it? It makes you so vulnerable. It opens your chest and it opens up your heart and it means that someone can get inside you and mess you up. You build up all these defenses, you build up a whole suit of armor, so that nothing can hurt you, then one stupid person, no different from any other stupid person, wanders into your stupid life… You give them a piece of you. They didn’t ask for it. They did something dumb one day, like kiss you or smile at you, and then your life isn’t your own anymore. Love takes hostages. It gets inside you. It eats you out and leaves you crying in the darkness, so simple a phrase like ‘maybe we should be just friends’ turns into a glass splinter working its way into your heart. It hurts. Not just in the imagination. Not just in the mind. It’s a soul-hurt, a real gets-inside-you-and-rips-you-apart pain. I hate love.”

why it’s fun to be stupid sometimes

March 14, 2006

Queen Latifah is just a presence onscreen. From “Living Out Loud”, to “Chicago” and now, “Last Holiday” - she’s just one woman you can’t watch, and you just gotta love her.

“Last Holiday”, for all it’s contrivances and unrealistic situations, is a really warm and fuzzy movie to watch. Like one famous movie critic says - the movie plays like a hug; and surely, you can’t beat a good hug.

——

“Date Movie” on the other hand in just downright stupid, but it’s so stupid it works. Let’s count the movies it tries to spoof and parody: When Harry Met Sally, Nothing Hill, Jerry Maguire, Dodgeball, Meet the Parents, Kill Bill, Sleepless in Seattle, As Good As It Gets, Hitch, The Wedding Planner, Pimp My Ride (which isn’t even a movie), Wedding Crashers, and maybe twenty other movies I might have missed.

Actually, for you film buffs, one way to have fun with this movie is take a friend who’s just as much as movie geek as you and simply try to spot all the movies “Date Movie” spoofs… because there is practically a spoof on every scene. Oh yeah, but leave your brain at the door, this is probably the most stupid movie I’ve ever seen - bar none.

——

Sadly, I haven’t seen all the supposedly good movies yet: Brokeback, Crash, Capote, Walk the Line, and whatever else is there. The only one I’ve seen is the Clooney-directed “Good Night and Good Luck”, which was an good, intense and interesting movie, although it does have some snore value…

I admit

March 13, 2006

Ok, I admit, I’ve thought about leaving my job.

In relation to that, I admit further that I’ve considered some things that have come my way.

…and I admit that I’ve practically dismissed all of them. (I think I brought up this topic of finding a new job to my mom and she said that in all her years of working and with all the people she’s been with, she realized that you will always find something to complain about. So if you decide to leave, think about it a lot and make sure that you really want to.)

I admit that work is going to be less worth going to now, for reasons that only a select few know about and would undertand.

I admit that I’m not staying for the money, but for the people. Sure, work sucks… but at least the laughs and smiles and jokes and jeers make it bearable. Even the human drama that surrounds everyday worklife is interesting… Ah yes, the human drama…

Although I’d be a hypocrite not to admit that of course, money is also a part of it. Money makes the world go ’round after all… … … but then there’s that other thing that makes the world go ’round.

I admit that I’ve been going though a lazy phase, and it looks as though it’s not going to end soon.

I admit that I am a very confused person in a lot of ways. Well, at least I’m not disturbed.

I admit that I have been mush for the past several months… whatever that means.

I admit that… … …some things are better left unsaid.

Secrets… and then some.

March 3, 2006

This is funny. Merriam-Webster Online’s #1 Word of the Year (in other words, the “most looked-up word”) for 2005 was:

Integrity

That just goes to show what kind of a world we’re living in right now, huh?

Anyway, I stumbled onto www.m-w.com because I wanted to see how they officially defined the word “secret”, and this is what I got:

a : kept from knowledge or view : HIDDEN
b : marked by the habit of discretion : CLOSEMOUTHED
c : working with hidden aims or methods : UNDERCOVER <a secret agent>
d : not acknowledged : UNAVOWED <a secret bride>
e : conducted in secret <a secret trial>

Now you might start asking why, pray tell, would I be fascinated with this word right now?

EDIT: After some thought, I edited out the “secrets” part of the entry. :)

I’d blog about our policitcal situation, the state of national emergency and proclamation whatever… but I’m too sleepy to do so, and so much has already been said about it, so I’d rather not. Instead, I leave you this quoted paragraph from Conrado de Quiros:

“I’ve always said every time I hear calls for this country to finally come together that this country has never had any problems uniting. It has done so repeatedly and, as in the case of the two Edsa People Power uprisings, completely resplendently. Unfortunately, as the case of the two Edsa revolts also shows, Filipinos find it a lot easier to unite in fighting against a common threat than in fighting for a common good.”

Now I’d also blog about music, but then again, tinatamad na ako so I’ll keep it short:

Belle and Sebastian are awesome! Read about them (click the link) or/and download these songs and get drowned in saccharine audio sweetness:

Post-Alternative-Progressive-Twee-Shoegazing-Rock… what?!

February 28, 2006

There, I finally updated the layout of this blog-which-I-have-no-idea-how-long-it-will-last. Blogs come and go for me… simply because wala lang akong tiyaga. However, this one… being both a “tambakan” for my pics and a… err… blog, maybe this has a chance at longevity.

Why the new layout? Well, I thought the bright and sunny colors, along with the sunflower field was just too… “brokeback” (if you catch my drift).

No new pictures for now. Part of the reason is because ang tanga tanga ko kasi, naiwan ko yung camera ko sa office! Buti nalang I still had friends who were still there (thanks to the wonders of overtime) to save my ass. I swear I’m gonna get into really big trouble someday because of my impeccably unreliable memory.

No pics for now, so I’ll just blog about… music. (for those not willing to read through the entire entry, you might want to know that there is an mp3 link at the bottom of the page)

I’m a big music fanatic, no question about it. Half the time, you would probably see me autistically (wow, adjective na pala ang “autistic” ngayon [but seriously, I’ve always thought that I’m mildly autistic]) going about my business with my headphones clamped firmlly onto my head with the world totally shut out.

It has come to my realization that music fanatics and critics alike have coined so many terms, and created so many genres that it’s pretty hard to accurately classify and describe music nowadays. For example, how many of you have heard the following genres: “Twee”, “Shoegaze”,”Post-Rock”,”Alt-Punk” and “Emo”? (look them up, there’s sure to be a description of each somewhere on the net)

See what I mean? And to further complicate things, prefixes like “post”, “prog” (for ‘progressive’), “neo”, and alt (for ‘alternative’) can pretty much preceed any basic genre out there. Again, for example: “Neo-Soul”, “Prog-Jazz”, “Alt-Folk”, “Post-Rock”. In short, music is being more and more amusingly complex. In no time, we’re going to hear genres such as “Neo-Progressive-Funkatronic-Jazz-Rock”. Ano daw?!

Right now, I’m stuck on Post-Rock

Specifically, I’m stuck on Mogwai, which is an amazing band! I would describe them, but it would be better for you to simply listen. Here are links to two of my favorite Mogwai songs:

Mogwai - “Folk Death 95″
Mogwai - Friend of the Night (from Mr. Beast) <– be sure to right-click and “Save As” on this one since it acts weird when simply left-clicked
